Enter the Worldâs Thinnest Notebook

Fortunately for you, Apple has recently unveiled MacBook Air, the world's thinnest notebook. MacBook Air measures an unprecedented 0.16-inches at its thinnest point, while its maximum height of 0.76-inches is less than the thinnest point on competing notebooks. MacBook Air has a stunning 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display, a full-size and backlit keyboard, a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing, and a spacious trackpad with multi-touch gesture support so users can pinch, rotate and swipe. MacBook Air is powered by a 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB L2 cache, and includes as standard features 2GB of memory, an 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive, and the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi technology and Bluetooth 2.1.

It stands to reason that the guys and girls at Apple are proud built to have built the world's thinnest notebook—andthis pride is justified. When you first see MacBook Air, it's hard to believe it's a high-performance notebook with a full-size keyboard and display.

Interaction just got even better. MacBook Air has a vibrant 13.3-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display that is energy efficient, and its spacious trackpad offers multi-touch gesture support for pinch, rotate and swipe, making it more intuitive than ever to browse and rotate photos or zoom into web pages in Safari. MacBook Air features a full-size keyboard design in a sleek and durable aluminum enclosure. The backlit keyboard makes it ideal for dimly lit environments such as airplanes, studios or conference halls, and a built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the keys as well as the display brightness for optimal visibility.

Fed up of running out of juice on the road, on the train or on the plane? The MacBook Air also delivers up to five hours of battery life for wireless productivity and includes AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi networking, which delivers up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g. Apple's Migration Assistant software now enables users to quickly transfer files, applications and preferences from your old Mac to MacBook Air right over your wireless network making the switch easy as pie.

If you are a data junky, you'll be glad to hear that MacBook Air users can buy the companion MacBook Air SuperDrive, a compact external drive designed for MacBook Air, for just $99. The MacBook Air SuperDrive is powered by MacBook Air's USB port, eliminating the need to carry a separate power adapter. Many MacBook Air users will not find a need for an optical drive now that they can wirelessly rent movies from the iTunes Store, wirelessly backup files with Time Capsule and access the optical drives on remote PCs or Macs to wirelessly install software applications on MacBook Air.

For the power hungry multi tasker in each of us, the MacBook Air is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo processors running at 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz, and includes as standard 2GB of memory and an 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive. An optional 64GB solid state drive contains no moving parts for added durability. Every MacBook Air includes a micro-DVI port so users can connect to Apple's gorgeous 20-inch or 23-inch Cinema Displays to extend their desktop or connect to projectors and other displays via DVI, VGA, Composite and S-video adapters. MacBook Air includes USB 2.0 for plugging in peripherals or charging an iPod or iPhone, a headphone jack and Apple's acclaimed MagSafe Power Adapter designed especially for mobile users.

Every MacBook Air comes with iLife '08, the most significant update ever to Apple's award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications, featuring a major new version of iPhoto and a completely reinvented iMovie, both seamlessly integrated with the new .Mac Web Gallery for online photo and video sharing. The new MacBook Air also comes with Leopard, the sixth major release of the world's most advanced operating system. Leopard introduces Time Machine, an effortless way to automatically back up everything on a Mac; a redesigned Finder that lets users quickly browse and share files between multiple Macs; Quick Look, a new way to instantly see files without opening an application; Spaces, an intuitive new feature used to create groups of applications and instantly switch between them; a brand new desktop with Stacks, a new way to easily access files from the Dock; and major enhancements to Mail and iChat. .Mac members can use the new Back to My Mac feature to browse and access files on their home computer from a MacBook Air over the Internet while out on the road.

And lets talk eco credentials shall we? The new MacBook Air embodies Apple's continuing environmental progress with its aluminum enclosure, a material highly desired by recyclers; Apple's first mercury-free LCD display with arsenic-free glass; and brominated flame retardant-free material for the majority of circuit boards as well as PVC-free internal cables. In addition, MacBook Air consumes the least amount of power of any Mac, and its retail box, made primarily from 100 percent post-consumer recycled material, is 56 percent smaller by volume than the previously smallest MacBook packaging.

If you are one of those people that just isn't content with an off the shelf, state of the art piece of kit, that treat yourself to some customization! Build-to-order options and accessories include the ability to upgrade to a 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor; 64GB solid state drive, MacBook Air SuperDrive, Apple USB Ethernet Adapter, Apple USB Modem, Apple MagSafe Airline Adapter, Apple Remote and the AppleCare Protection Plan. Additional build-to-order options also include pre-installed copies of iWork '08, Logic® Express 8, Final Cut® Express 4 and Aperture™ 1.5.

As per usual, Battery life depends on configuration and use. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information. AirPort Extreme is based on an IEEE 802.11n draft specification. Actual performance will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network and other factors.

As you can see, they have done it again! Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone. What can we say, we love you Apple! Keep'em comin'.

Which Printer is Better, An Inkjet or Laser?

Cost of acquisition is the major hurdle in buying a laser printer, though even that is dwindling. Many 'business inkjets' can be had for a small sum - laser printers are traditionally about 50% more expensive. However, this is about the only advantage that inkjets have. The most expensive laser printers can be very expensive indeed, but they're designed for high volume printing. A lot of publishing companies are now buying high end laser printers and using them as internal printing plants.

The reason why that makes sense is because of the second differentiator. Cost per printed page. Inkjet cartridges both cost more than toner cartridges, and produce far fewer pages per refill. A typical laser printer cartridge for a desktop printer is good for about 4,000 pages. A typical ink cartridge is good for about 200 pages, a factor of twenty difference. You can get around this with remanufactured cartridges, but the remanufactured toner cartridges last longer still. When comparing the cost per print, an inkjet can be more than twenty to thirty times as expensive per page produced. Over the life of the printer, that can add up considerably.

Colour reproduction is the undisputed area where inkjet printers hold the advantage, but that margin is getting thinner every year and new product release cycle. This is because good inkjets can use photographic grade inks, and can use multiple ink solutions to get a richer span of colors. They may also use archival quality inks, which will stand fast against fading. Because of this advantage, most high end inkjet printers are used for graphic artists and quick reproduction shops, and the cost of the consumables is built into the final product.

The last area of differentiation between laser and inkjet printers is printing speed. Lasers are faster, and due to mechanical advantages will likely remain so; they don't have to worry about over saturating the page with ink and turning the paper into mush. Because of this advantage in speed, laser printers are the dominant technology in small businesses. Laser printers are also likelier to have deeper paper drawers (because they're left to run without monitoring) and attachments like hole puncher and saddle stitch binders. That said, in many cases, rather than buying the fastest laser printer, you may be better off buying two of the previous year's model - it gives you double the printing speed and the ability to run two different print jobs at once.

When looking at 'which is better', the question comes down to 'how much can you spend initially' and 'is spending more money now on a laser going to pay for itself in reduced consumable costs in the next six to eight months? Look at your needs and choose accordingly.

Artificial grass, astroturf, the benefits and drawbacks
The benefits of replacing a natural lawn with a synthetic surface are really endless. There are many frequently asked questions. A perfect lawn is hard to achieve even with near perfect conditions. Many attributes contribute to an imperfect lawn to name a few are; poor drainage, insufficient sun light, heavy foot traffic, pets and worm cast are just a few. Artificial grass truly is the answer to many committed and not so committed lawn lovers. Installing an artificial lawn can be carried out by a professional installer, qualified landscaper or a keen do it yourself enthusiast. The link will take you to a pictorial step by step method commonly employed. Installing artificial grass.

Reasons for the consideration are;

No more watering!
No more worm casts!
No more weeds!
No more worn or soil patches!
No more muddy feet!
No more scorching from the sun!
No more yellow patches left from the pets!
No more grass cuttings!
No more chemicals!
No more hard work maintaining!
More time on the lawn enjoying it!
An all year-round lush green lawn!

The new generation of fake or false grass products is the "3G" or third generation. New technology and yarns have superseded the illumines green carpet of old. Artificial grass often generically called Astroturf by the general public has been developed in an array of styles. Colour, density and length are the main differences between these products but all are made with the same fine yarns and quality in product and manufacture are equal.

It has to be said though that there are drawbacks from having an artificial grass surface installed, but I will give my counterstatement against these as I do believe they are just.

Worms won't live under the surface.
This will deprive our native birds of their morning feast of lawn worms I agree, but it won't stop them from visiting the lawn borders especially if there is mulch for them to search for insects. I love to see Blackbirds and Thrushes searching for worms so I have invested in a wormery or Vermicompost

More expensive than maintaining a natural lawn.
Yes I agree but over the lifetime of the surface the quality of time gained from not having to maintain the lawn is priceless and for me time has a greater value than cost.

Does heat up in very hot weather. I agree, but only with extreme conditions and direct sunlight. Sandals or flip-flops is the obvious answer just as one would were on a sunny beach.

Only has a life expectancy of 15/20 years.
Yes I agree. I expect to last around the same time and by then I wont be concerned about replacing it. If I move home I can always take it with me.
